Apple has unveiled the Apple Watch Series 12 and Apple Watch Ultra 4, introducing a notable software feature called Siri Recaps. This new Audio Intelligence capability enables the watch to listen continuously and provide summaries of daily activities and conversations. Integrated into the Siri app, Siri Recaps uses the watch’s sensors to deliver timely recaps, which can be scheduled or accessed via the Smart Stack interface.

Unlike traditional recording devices, Siri Recaps does not store or transcribe audio. Instead, it processes conversations in real time using Siri's AI to generate actionable notes without retaining raw audio data. This approach aims to balance functionality with privacy, as only interactions initiated by the wake word are logged, consistent with current smart device practices.

The feature draws comparisons to devices like Amazon Bee, which also capture and summarize conversations, but Siri Recaps emphasizes on-device processing and privacy safeguards. Apple highlights that audio data is never accessible to the company, thanks to Private Cloud Compute technology, and that summaries are automatically deleted after seven days.

Despite these protections, the always-listening nature of Siri Recaps has sparked privacy concerns, especially regarding consent from others involved in conversations. This unease echoes the backlash against other wearable technologies with recording capabilities, such as Meta’s smart glasses, which have faced bans and social stigma.

Apple also introduced Live Rewind, another Audio Intelligence feature that allows users to review the last 15 seconds of audio on their watch face, regardless of whether a wake word was spoken. Both features have potential accessibility benefits, particularly for individuals with hearing impairments.

Apple has published detailed information about its Audio Intelligence approach, emphasizing that no audio recordings exist to be shared or requested, and independent security experts can verify these claims. The company’s focus on privacy and transparency seeks to build user trust amid ongoing debates about surveillance and wearable technology.

As wearable devices evolve, the balance between innovative features and privacy remains a critical consideration for users and manufacturers alike.
