Apple’s Upcoming Event Expected to Unveil First Foldable iPhone and New Devices

Apple is set to hold its annual product launch event on September 9, where it is expected to reveal its first foldable iPhone, marking the company’s entry into the foldable smartphone market more than five years after competitors like Samsung. This launch comes amid a leadership transition as Tim Cook prepares to hand over the CEO role to John Ternus, former Vice President of Hardware Engineering.
The foldable iPhone, reportedly called the "iPhone Ultra," is anticipated to feature a 5.5-inch cover display that unfolds into a 7.8-inch screen, resembling a small iPad. Early reports from insiders describe the device as having a premium build and a pocket-friendly form factor. To maintain a sleek design, Apple is said to have omitted the telephoto camera, instead including a dual-lens rear camera system with main and ultra-wide lenses. The device is also expected to support MagSafe charging but will replace Face ID with a side-mounted Touch ID fingerprint sensor.
Multitasking capabilities are likely to be a highlight, with the foldable iPhone supporting side-by-side app usage on the expanded screen. Despite its tablet-like size when unfolded, the device will run iOS rather than iPadOS. Apple is also reportedly addressing the common foldable phone issue of visible screen creases, aiming for a less noticeable fold.
For users not interested in foldable devices or the premium price point, Apple is expected to launch new models in the iPhone 18 series, including the Pro and Pro Max variants. Notably, the standard iPhone 18 may be released several months after the Pro models, a departure from Apple's usual release pattern.
In addition to smartphones, Apple is likely to update its HomePod smart speaker lineup, integrating advancements tied to its Gemini-powered Siri AI. A recent macOS preview revealed references to new HomePod models.
One of the more unexpected developments involves AirPods equipped with built-in cameras. These cameras are designed to provide visual input to Siri, enabling features like saving visual information from the user’s environment. Apple emphasizes privacy, with the cameras capturing low-resolution data solely for enhancing the digital assistant’s capabilities, rather than for photo or video recording.
This event is significant as it signals Apple’s expansion into new device categories and form factors, reflecting ongoing innovation in hardware design and AI integration. The introduction of a foldable iPhone could reshape consumer expectations for mobile devices, while the enhancements to Siri and AirPods may influence the future of voice and visual assistant technologies.
