Claude, the consumer-facing AI product, is restricted to users aged 18 and above. During account setup, users must confirm they meet this age requirement. If the system detects potential underage use, it prompts users to verify their age before continuing.
The verification process is managed through Yoti, a third-party age verification platform. Users receive a verification link via email and can choose from several methods to prove their age. These include facial age estimation through a selfie, uploading a photo of an official ID such as a passport or driver's license, or sharing a verified "over 18" attribute via the Yoti Digital ID app.
To protect user privacy, Yoti operates under SOC2 compliance and deletes all personal data, including selfies and ID images, immediately after verification. Anthropic, the company behind Claude, only receives a pass or fail result and does not access or store any personal information from the verification process.
This age assurance system helps ensure compliance with legal requirements and enhances user safety by preventing minors from accessing the platform.
