CloudNC, a UK startup specializing in manufacturing software, announced a $20 million Series B extension round, increasing its total funding to $128 million. Founded in 2015 by Theo Saville and Chris Emery, the company develops AI-powered CAM Assist software designed to automate complex decision-making in Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machining processes. CNC machining involves computer-controlled machines shaping materials into precise parts used in industries such as automotive and defense.
Traditionally, machinists or manufacturing programmers manually determine critical factors like tool selection and part holding strategies using CAM software. While existing CAM tools assist in creating part features, they do not generate comprehensive execution strategies as an expert would. CloudNC’s CAM Assist integrates with established CAM platforms like Autodesk Fusion and Mastercam to automate these strategic manufacturing decisions.
The software selects appropriate tools, cutting directions, and machining parameters, then generates the necessary CNC code. Users review and adjust the output, ensuring expert oversight remains central to the process. According to Saville, CAM Assist functions as an expert assistant, streamlining initial programming and repetitive setups to boost efficiency and productivity.
Currently, over 1,000 machine shops worldwide use CAM Assist, with 80% of CloudNC’s customers based in the U.S. The company employs 80 people and aims to scale adoption further. The new funding round, led by Nimble Ventures and including investors such as Lockheed Martin’s venture arm, will help CloudNC expand go-to-market efforts, enter new markets, and develop additional products.
One upcoming product, Quote Agent, targets manufacturers by estimating project costs and risks to accelerate decision-making on new work. This tool addresses challenges like the reshoring trend and skilled labor shortages in U.S. manufacturing. Quote Agent is expected to launch next month.
Saville emphasized the complexity of CNC machining, noting that there are more ways to machine a part than atoms in the universe. CloudNC’s approach combines real-world machining experience with software innovation to tackle this challenge and improve manufacturing workflows.
