Contact with Soil and Nature Boosts Skin Microbial Diversity and Immune Health

Spending time outdoors and physically interacting with soil, plants, and natural surfaces can significantly enhance the diversity of microbes on human skin, according to recent research. This microbial diversity is linked to improved immune system function and skin health. Ecologist Mira Grönroos from the Finnish Environment Institute conducted experiments where participants rubbed their hands with soil, peat, and moss for just 20 seconds. Despite washing their hands afterward, the variety and abundance of microbes on their skin increased substantially. This suggests that brief contact with natural materials can quickly alter the skin's microbial community. While the idea of more bacteria on the skin may seem concerning, a diverse microbial population helps maintain balance by preventing harmful pathogens from dominating. This balance is important for protecting against infections and supporting immune regulation. Children at a Finnish daycare center who regularly play outdoors in a forest-like environment show greater microbial diversity on their skin compared to those in paved yards. Long-term exposure to natural materials like peat and woodchips was associated with fewer potential pathogens and increased beneficial bacteria. Researchers also observed changes in immune markers that indicate improved immune system regulation. These findings support the biodiversity hypothesis, which proposes that reduced environmental biodiversity contributes to the rise in immune-related conditions such as allergies and autoimmune diseases. One bacterial group, gammaproteobacteria, was identified as particularly influential in enhancing immune regulatory cells. Adults also benefit from contact with microbially rich environments. Studies involving indoor gardening with microbially diverse soil and the installation of living plant walls in offices demonstrated increases in skin microbial diversity and reductions in inflammatory markers in the blood. Experts suggest that urban planning should facilitate more frequent and unintentional contact with nature to promote public health. While further research is needed to clarify the impact on specific immune disorders, current evidence indicates that regular interaction with natural environments offers low-risk health benefits. Overall, these studies highlight the value of embracing natural, outdoor experiences and not shying away from getting hands dirty as a simple way to support skin and immune health.
