German Rocket Spectrum Achieves First Orbital Launch from European Soil

On September 5, 2025, German aerospace company Isar Aerospace made history by successfully launching its Spectrum rocket into orbit from the Andøya Space Center in northern Norway. The two-stage, 28-meter-tall vehicle lifted off at 10:12 p.m. local time and entered an elliptical orbit around Earth just over seven minutes later. This marks the first time a rocket has reached orbit from European soil. Spectrum’s successful flight, dubbed "Onward and Upward," was the rocket's second attempt after its inaugural launch in March 2025 ended prematurely due to an anomaly. The initial flight failed less than a minute after liftoff because of an unintended vent valve opening and loss of attitude control during a roll maneuver. Isar Aerospace conducted a thorough investigation and addressed the issues before preparing for the second launch. The path to this milestone was marked by several setbacks, including a pressurization valve issue that delayed the launch from January to March, weather-related scrubs, a leak in a pressure vessel, and fluid system irregularities detected in June. Despite these challenges, the company resolved the problems and successfully completed the orbital insertion on this latest flight. Unlike the first flight, Spectrum carried payloads this time, including five cubesats and a non-deployable scientific experiment. The rocket is designed to carry up to 1,000 kilograms to low Earth orbit, positioning it as a potential workhorse for launching small to medium-sized satellites. Isar Aerospace has manufacturing capabilities near Munich that could produce more than 30 Spectrum rockets annually, signaling ambitions for frequent and operational launches. This achievement is significant for the European spaceflight sector, which has lacked an orbital launch vehicle operating directly from its territory until now.
