Pocket FM, an Indian platform specializing in serialized audio stories, has significantly increased its annualized revenue run rate to $500 million, driven by extensive use of artificial intelligence in content production. According to co-founder and CEO Rohan Nayak, AI now supports 93% of the platform's entire catalog and is responsible for producing 99% of new content.

The company integrates AI tools into its creative process rather than relying on fully autonomous content generation. While human creators continue to develop story ideas, AI is used to efficiently transform these concepts into finished audio content. Vasu Sharma, Pocket FM’s AI head and a former scientist at Meta and Tesla, explained that the startup has developed proprietary AI models for creative writing and text-to-speech, trained on years of production data and listener engagement metrics.

This AI-driven approach has drastically reduced production costs—making content creation approximately 80 times cheaper—and accelerated output, enabling the production of 100 hours of content in a single day compared to about a year previously. The platform’s creator base of over 550,000 now produces roughly 2.5 million hours of AI-assisted content annually, a substantial increase from 100,000 hours two years ago. Pocket FM’s library currently includes more than 770,000 audio series.

The expanded content volume has improved listener retention, with the 12-month revenue retention rate rising to 76% from 44% over two years. Nayak attributes this to a broader variety of stories catering to diverse listener preferences.

Pocket FM’s revenue growth coincides with its international expansion into markets such as the U.K., Germany, France, and the U.S., where user-generated content has been introduced. The U.S. now represents the largest market, accounting for about 70% of the company’s annualized revenue run rate, which includes approximately $85 million from advertising and $415 million from paid user content.

Beyond audio, Pocket FM’s parent company, Pocket Entertainment, is extending its AI content model to other formats. Its microdrama app, Pocket Saga, available in the U.S., has reached a $15 million annualized revenue run rate with entirely AI-generated content. The company is also repurposing successful audio stories into AI-generated videos without traditional production.

Pocket Entertainment plans to explore additional entertainment formats over the next five years and aims to license popular stories for adaptation into books, television, and films.

The startup, based in Bengaluru and Culver City, California, is reportedly in discussions to raise $100 million to $120 million at a valuation near $2 billion, although CEO Nayak has not confirmed details. The funds would primarily support further AI development and new entertainment ventures. Pocket Entertainment is currently profitable and cash flow positive on an adjusted basis but has no immediate plans for a public offering, keeping options open for a potential listing in India or the U.S. within the next two years.
