Mistral AI Secures €3 Billion in Funding to Advance Sovereign AI Ambitions
2 min read
French artificial intelligence lab Mistral AI announced it has raised €3 billion (approximately $3.58 billion) in a Series D funding round, bringing its valuation to more than €21 billion ($24.39 billion). The round, described by Mistral as the largest equity fundraising ever completed by a European technology company, was led by Samsung Electronics with co-leads including EQT-managed Scaleup Europe Fund and existing investor PSG Equity.
Mistral plans to use the capital to increase its computing power, develop infrastructure, accelerate commercial growth, and expand its operations internationally. The company aims to clarify its positioning as an AI lab rather than a direct competitor to models like ChatGPT, despite its models not yet being widely adopted.
This funding supports Mistral's strategic pivot toward addressing concerns in Europe and beyond about dependency on U.S. technology providers, especially amid evolving AI regulations and geopolitical tensions. The company has set a goal to build 1 gigawatt of compute capacity in Europe by 2030 and recently introduced tools allowing customers to select the regions where their AI data is processed. Additionally, Mistral hosts third-party AI models, including Chinese ones, to offer customers greater control over the AI models they use.
Mistral emphasizes that its foundational research underpins its infrastructure and products, reinforcing its commitment to AI sovereignty. The company operates in 20 countries and focuses on helping governments and corporations leverage AI while maintaining control, distinguishing itself from other AI labs like OpenAI and Anthropic that market their models more broadly.
The involvement of Samsung and support from French authorities highlight the geopolitical significance of this funding round. French President Emmanuel Macron described the investment as a step toward creating a "third way in AI" alongside France and South Korea. This reflects broader efforts to develop sovereign AI capabilities outside the U.S. and China.
While Mistral benefits from its European roots and international backing, it continues to collaborate with U.S. companies, notably expanding its strategic partnership with Microsoft earlier this year. The Series D round also included American investors such as a16z, Nvidia, Salesforce Ventures, Advent, and BlackRock, alongside European backers and Luxembourg’s government.
With a diverse and international investor base, Mistral is positioning itself to meet growing demand for sovereign AI infrastructure, balancing global partnerships with a focus on regional autonomy in AI technology.
