NHTSA Investigates Tesla’s Cybercab Launch Without Traditional Controls

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has opened an investigation into Tesla following the company's deployment of its Cybercab in Austin, Texas. The Cybercab is notable for lacking traditional manual controls such as a steering wheel and brake pedals, which are typically required under federal vehicle safety regulations. Tesla informed NHTSA that it self-certified the Cybercab as meeting all applicable Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS). NHTSA's inquiry aims to review the technical data and certification process Tesla used to declare the Cybercab compliant. The agency will evaluate whether Tesla’s certification appropriately considered which federal standards apply to this type of autonomous vehicle. This investigation follows a similar process initiated against Zoox, an Amazon-owned autonomous vehicle company, after it self-certified its robotaxi lacking traditional controls. Zoox’s case offers some insight into the potential regulatory path for Tesla. Zoox faced delays due to the investigation but eventually received a temporary exemption allowing limited commercial operation of its robotaxi service. Whether Tesla will encounter a comparable timeline or regulatory challenges remains to be seen. This investigation highlights the evolving regulatory landscape as autonomous vehicle manufacturers push the boundaries of traditional vehicle design. It underscores the need for clear federal guidelines to ensure safety while accommodating new technologies that depart from conventional vehicle controls.
