OpenTrailPaper has developed a GPS device centered around a 4.7-inch e-paper display that remains readable in direct sunlight, catering to outdoor enthusiasts who require clear visibility. The device supports offline maps, routes, ride files, and logs through an SD card slot, allowing users to access navigation data without an internet connection.
Equipped with GPS, capacitive touch controls, a front light, a built-in battery, and USB-C connectivity all on a single board, the device also supports Bluetooth 5 for connecting heart-rate monitors, power meters, and cadence sensors. Firmware updates can be conveniently installed via a desktop Chromium browser over USB.
However, the device has some limitations. It does not include a pressure sensor or barometric altimeter, meaning elevation data and total ascent are estimated from map tiles rather than directly measured. The GPS module is basic and may not perform as well as modern multi-band receivers, especially under dense tree cover or in urban environments. Additionally, the absence of a magnetometer means the map orientation relies solely on movement direction, which can be problematic when stationary.
Battery life is measured at approximately eight hours, with tests showing around 7.4 hours of use on a 1,500 mAh battery without the front light. Interaction primarily depends on the capacitive touch panel, which can be challenging to use with gloves or in wet conditions due to weak hardware buttons. The device also lacks waterproofing and an IP rating, requiring users to provide their own protective casing for use in rainy weather.
