Oura Files for IPO as Smart Ring Market Sees Rising Competition

2 min read

Oura, a leading player in the smart ring industry, officially filed for an initial public offering on September 3. The Finnish company reported nearly doubling its revenue to $1.21 billion for the nine months ending June 30 and sold 3.6 million rings over the past year, with approximately 5 million paid members. This move comes shortly after the launch of the Oura Ring 5, its slimmest and lightest model to date. While Oura has dominated the market for years, several competitors are emerging, each focusing on different features to challenge its position. French company Circular plans to release a ring with NFC-enabled contactless payments and haptic feedback for notifications and health alerts. Chinese firm RingConn introduced a ring earlier this year that includes vibration alerts and vascular health insights. Indian startup Ultrahuman recently raised $70 million to develop a smart ring capable of running software directly on the device, aiming to expand beyond health tracking into AI interactions and gaming. Ultrahuman’s latest Ring Pro, priced at $479, features a redesigned heart-rate sensor and a dual-core processor to enhance data accuracy and on-device processing. Other contenders include Samsung, which launched the Galaxy Ring priced at $399, targeting users within its ecosystem but offering more basic health tracking features compared to rivals. Dreame introduced a smart ring with a touchpad for controlling phone functions and haptic alerts, though pricing and availability remain undisclosed. The smart ring market is evolving beyond simple health and sleep monitoring to incorporate more smartphone-like capabilities, such as payment functions, touch controls, and advanced biometric tracking. This shift raises questions about whether smart rings will maintain their original appeal as unobtrusive health devices or become miniaturized smartphones worn on the finger. As the market grows more crowded and technologically diverse, consumers can expect a wider range of smart ring options tailored to different needs and preferences, intensifying the competition for Oura’s leadership position.
