Oura Files to Go Public as Smart Ring Market Sees Rising Competition

Oura, a leading player in the smart ring market, officially filed to go public on September 3, marking a significant milestone for the Finnish company. The firm reported nearly doubling its revenue to $1.21 billion for the nine months ending June 30 and has sold 3.6 million rings over the past year, with approximately 5 million paid members. This move follows the recent launch of the Oura Ring 5, its lightest and slimmest model to date. Despite Oura's dominance, the smart ring market is becoming increasingly crowded with new entrants offering varied features. French company Circular plans to release the Ring 3 series early next year, which will include NFC-enabled contactless payments and haptic feedback for alerts. The Ring 3 Pro will also offer FDA-cleared ECG for atrial fibrillation detection, blood pressure trend monitoring, glucose tracking, and advanced sleep analysis. Chinese company RingConn introduced its Gen 3 ring earlier this year, priced from $349. It provides vascular health insights by assessing vascular strain, along with tracking heart rate, blood oxygen levels, sleep, activity, and stress. The device uses vibration alerts for health notifications and reminders. Indian startup Ultrahuman recently raised $70 million to develop smart rings capable of running software directly on the device, aiming to expand beyond health tracking into AI interactions and gaming. Its third-generation Ring Pro, priced at $479, will begin shipping in the U.S. in mid-September. The device features a redesigned heart-rate sensor and a dual-core processor for improved data accuracy and on-device processing, developed to bypass a patent dispute with Oura. Samsung entered the smart ring market in 2024 with the Galaxy Ring, priced at $399. While it integrates well with Samsung’s ecosystem, it offers more basic health and sleep tracking features compared to competitors, lacking advanced capabilities such as sleep apnea and atrial fibrillation detection. Newcomer Dreame also unveiled a smart ring featuring haptic alerts and a touchpad for controlling phone functions like music playback and photography. It supports heart rate, blood oxygen, heart rate variability, and sleep monitoring, though pricing and availability remain unannounced. The smart ring market is evolving rapidly, with companies competing to pack more smartphone-like capabilities into compact, wearable devices. This trend challenges the original appeal of smart rings as discreet health trackers, potentially transforming them into multifunctional gadgets worn on the finger. As the market grows more complex, consumers will have a wider range of options catering to different needs and preferences.
