Tailwind Labs, the team behind the widely used Tailwind CSS framework, has announced it is joining Shopify. Tailwind CSS, which has been installed over 110 million times weekly and is utilized by major companies including ChatGPT, X, Cloudflare, Reddit, and Shopify itself, will now be maintained and developed under Shopify's umbrella.
The decision comes after nine years of independent development, with the goal of providing a more stable and sustainable future for the framework. Tailwind Labs aims to focus on building Tailwind CSS in service of a complex product, addressing real-world challenges faced by users, and innovating solutions that benefit the broader community.
Shopify offers a significant platform for this work, as merchants require tools to design and host custom storefronts, manage sales and inventory, and deliver seamless shopping and checkout experiences. Shopify's ongoing exploration into advanced user interface concepts, such as agentic commerce, aligns with Tailwind's development goals.
Shopify was an early adopter of Tailwind CSS at scale, integrating it into their technology stack and supporting its growth. This partnership ensures that Tailwind will continue to be actively maintained and evolve alongside changing development practices.
Tailwind Labs emphasized that the framework and its open-source projects will remain MIT-licensed and freely available. The team will continue leading these projects with Shopify's support. Commercially, Tailwind Labs will cease growing its business around Tailwind products, closing new customer sign-ups while maintaining access for existing users.
This collaboration reflects a shared commitment to empowering entrepreneurs and enhancing the tools available for building modern web interfaces.
