Tesla Invites Businesses to Operate Cybercab Fleets, Expanding Robotaxi Ambitions

Tesla has taken a new step toward expanding its autonomous vehicle operations by inviting businesses to participate in running fleets of its upcoming Cybercab robotaxis. The company published an interest form targeting potential fleet buyers and infrastructure providers ahead of its Cybercab event in Austin. While this does not confirm Tesla will sell vehicles to third parties, it indicates a strategic move to scale its robotaxi network beyond company-owned operations. Tesla CEO Elon Musk has long envisioned a large fleet of affordable robotaxis, initially focusing on Tesla owners renting out their vehicles equipped with self-driving software. This concept was highlighted as early as 2016 and reiterated during Tesla's 2019 Autonomy Day. However, the vision of a peer-to-peer ride-sharing network has not yet come to fruition. Instead, Tesla has concentrated on testing and deploying its own fleet, starting with Model Y vehicles and now transitioning to the purpose-built Cybercab. Previously, Tesla appeared intent on managing its robotaxi service internally. The recent interest form, which invites parties to engage in activities such as Cybercab fleet purchasing, mobility hub development, and infrastructure support, suggests the company is exploring partnerships with third-party operators. Details on how these collaborations would function remain unspecified. This move aligns Tesla with a growing number of companies entering the autonomous fleet management space. For example, Moove, an African fintech startup, manages Waymo's autonomous fleets in several U.S. cities and plans to expand further. Other players include Avomo, New Horizon, and established rental companies like Avis and Hertz, some of which have partnered with Uber to enter the robotaxi market. By opening the door to external fleet operators, Tesla could accelerate market penetration and expand its autonomous vehicle presence more rapidly. This approach may help the company leverage a broader ecosystem to realize its long-term robotaxi ambitions.
