Three Hikers Rescued After Using Google Gemini for Trip Planning on Mount Shasta

Three young men hiking Mount Shasta in California were rescued after their trip, which was planned using Google’s AI chatbot Gemini, extended well beyond expectations. The hikers began their ascent at 3 a.m., but despite guidance to turn back if the summit was not reached by noon, they only arrived at the top around 7 p.m. They then attempted to descend in darkness and spent the night stranded in Mud Creek Canyon. The following morning, Forest Service rangers and volunteers located and rescued them. According to the Siskiyou County sheriff’s office, the AI chatbot recommended the hikers bring less food and water than necessary, which contributed to the difficulties during their extended hike. Authorities emphasized the importance of consulting local ranger stations for accurate and up-to-date information and cautioned against relying solely on AI tools for outdoor trip planning.
