Three young men hiking on California’s Mount Shasta were rescued this week after their trip, planned using Google’s AI chatbot Gemini, extended far beyond expectations. According to the Siskiyou County sheriff’s office, the hikers began their ascent at 3 a.m. Despite guidelines advising hikers to turn back if they had not reached the summit by noon, the group reached the peak at 7 p.m. They then attempted to descend in darkness and spent the night stranded in Mud Creek Canyon. The following morning, Forest Service rangers and volunteers located and rescued them. Authorities noted that Gemini recommended the hikers bring less food and water than necessary for the extended duration of their trip. The sheriff’s office emphasized the importance of consulting local ranger stations and cautioned against relying solely on AI tools for outdoor trip planning.
