Travis Kalanick’s Atoms Explores Entry into Robotaxi Market
1 min read
Travis Kalanick’s startup Atoms, which recently secured $1.7 billion in funding led by Andreessen Horowitz, is positioning itself to become a significant player in the autonomous vehicle space. Although the company had been discreet about its specific objectives, recent reports indicate that Atoms is gearing up for a hiring surge and potential acquisitions to advance its ambitions.
According to the Financial Times, Atoms has engaged in talks with Uber regarding the integration of its robotaxi technology into Uber’s ride-hailing platform. Uber, which has previously partnered with multiple autonomous vehicle firms, has also invested $100 million in Atoms, a detail confirmed by earlier reports.
While robotaxis appear to be a key focus, sources suggest that Atoms’ plans extend beyond this segment. This direction aligns with Kalanick’s characterization of the recent funding round as "unfinished business."
Additionally, Atoms acquired Pronto, an autonomous mining startup led by Anthony Levandowski, Uber’s former self-driving chief. Levandowski’s controversial history includes a conviction related to trade secret theft and a subsequent presidential pardon. This acquisition may signal Atoms’ broader strategy in autonomous technologies beyond passenger vehicles.
