Panos Panay, Amazon's Senior Vice President of Devices, Alexa, and Leo, addressed the role of failure in innovation during TechCrunch Disrupt in San Francisco. Drawing from his nearly two decades at Microsoft, Panay stressed that failure is an essential step in pushing boundaries and building successful products.

Panay recounted his experience with the Surface RT tablet, which resulted in a nearly $1 billion write-down and was widely regarded as a significant failure. He noted that admitting failure was straightforward, but the critical part was understanding the decisions that led to it, such as incomplete software and inventory mismanagement.

He advised startup founders to confront failures honestly, learn from them, and avoid making excuses. Panay emphasized that maintaining a clear vision despite setbacks is crucial, pointing out that the Surface product line eventually found success by staying true to its original goals.

According to Panay, the key to recovery and progress lies in adapting based on lessons learned rather than making drastic changes. He suggested that founders often need to adjust their approach slightly—by about 30 degrees—rather than completely pivoting, to move forward effectively.

Panay's message underscores the importance of resilience and continuous learning in technology development, encouraging innovators to embrace failure as a necessary part of growth rather than a final defeat.
