Anthropic has confirmed it operates a wet biology laboratory in the Bay Area where it applies its artificial intelligence models to conduct physical biological experiments. This approach supports the company's belief that real-world lab work remains essential for advancing biological research, even as AI capabilities grow.

Eric Kauderer-Abrams, Anthropic’s head of life sciences, emphasized that the lab functions similarly to traditional biotech facilities, combining internal research with collaborations involving external partners. The lab’s primary focus is on fundamental biology rather than direct drug discovery efforts.

This development follows Anthropic’s acquisition of Coefficient Bio, a stealth AI biotech startup, earlier this year. Despite its involvement in biology, Anthropic aims to avoid competing with pharmaceutical companies, many of which are its customers and collaborators. For example, Anthropic recently announced a partnership with Novo Nordisk on joint drug discovery projects.

To support the broader scientific community, Anthropic launched a Life Sciences Verification Program to provide vetted biological researchers access to its most advanced AI models. The company has also published reports detailing its work on accelerating protein design and enhancing biomolecular modeling, both relevant to drug discovery.

Anthropic’s move into wet lab biology comes amid ongoing concerns within the AI community about the risks of advanced AI technologies. Notably, former Anthropic researcher Jacob Coxon warned about existential risks from AI, and the company’s alignment lead has estimated a greater than 10% chance of AI posing an extinction-level threat within the next decade. CEO Dario Amodei has called for industry-wide self-regulation and highlighted bioterrorism as a significant risk associated with AI.

This contrast between cautious warnings and active biological experimentation has drawn attention in the tech sector. Investor Chamath Palihapitiya commented on social media, noting the irony of a company advocating for AI regulation while building a wet lab, underscoring the complex challenges at the intersection of AI and biology.
