Google has launched a new password manager switching feature for Android devices that eliminates the need to export passwords via CSV files when changing apps. This update enables users to transfer all their saved passwords and passkeys directly between password manager applications installed on their device. To use the feature, users open their new password manager app and select the option to import or copy passwords from their previous app. Android then detects the password managers present and facilitates a secure transfer process. Users can review and approve the data being moved with just a few taps. The inclusion of passkey transfer means users do not have to set them up again after switching apps. This approach also reduces the risk of data exposure associated with CSV file handling. The feature is currently supported by Google’s password manager and select partners including 1Password, Bitwarden, and Dashlane, with plans to add more apps. It is available on devices running Android 8 and later versions.
