Deven Parekh, co-leader of Insight Partners for over two decades, shared insights on the firm’s investment philosophy during a recent TechCrunch event in New York. While many venture capitalists are heavily focused on frontier AI companies like OpenAI and Anthropic, Insight Partners continues to pursue a diversified portfolio across stages and sectors.
Parekh emphasized that despite the excitement around AI, the firm prefers to let its portfolio performance speak rather than engage in loud public discourse. Insight Partners manages $90 billion in assets and invests globally across early-stage, growth, and buyout opportunities, adjusting allocations based on market conditions.
Regarding AI, Parekh acknowledged the risks but underscored the significant benefits, particularly in healthcare, where AI can analyze vast patient data to improve diagnostics and treatment. He also noted that while AI infrastructure talent is concentrated in San Francisco, vertical AI investments can be more geographically diverse.
Insight Partners holds stakes in both OpenAI and Anthropic, a practice that was once rare in venture capital. Parekh explained that the firm’s investments in these companies occurred at later stages, allowing them to avoid conflicts typically associated with early-stage competing investments.
He expressed caution about concentrated bets on a few AI companies, advocating for diversification to manage risk and meet limited partners’ expectations. Parekh also highlighted the growing importance of secondaries as a liquidity mechanism, helping investors realize returns amid a crowded funding environment.
Looking ahead, Parekh expects more AI companies to go public, noting that while a few large firms dominate now, the market will eventually demand more mature growth profiles. He also discussed the cyclical nature of venture capital funding and the need for disciplined portfolio management, including knowing when to double down or exit investments.
Overall, Insight Partners’ approach reflects a balance between embracing AI’s transformative potential and maintaining a broad, risk-aware investment strategy to sustain long-term value for investors.
