Meta has introduced a new feature allowing AI agents to handle the setup and management of WhatsApp Business messaging. This service enables companies to communicate with customers through WhatsApp, but until now, setting it up involved navigating multiple tools such as the Developer Console, Business Manager, and API references. With the new system, businesses can simply interact with an AI agent to complete these tasks.
This capability is enabled by the WhatsApp Business Tools MCP, a Model Context Protocol server that links AI coding agents like Claude, Cursor, Codex, or ChatGPT directly to the WhatsApp Business Platform. This expands Meta's existing MCP server offerings, which previously focused on ad management and app configuration, to now include business onboarding for WhatsApp.
The AI agent automates several setup steps, including creating the WhatsApp Business account, verifying phone numbers, registering for Cloud API access, and confirming compliance with Terms of Service. Additionally, businesses can use the AI to create or modify messaging templates, test messages and webhooks, and monitor critical elements such as payment methods and business verification status.
Meta also highlights that its Meta Social Technologies MCP server can assist during setup by helping discover API endpoints, searching documentation, and troubleshooting errors. This integration aims to reduce the manual workload for developers and improve the efficiency of onboarding businesses to WhatsApp Business messaging.
