Meta has announced its newest virtual reality device, Meta VR Glasses, aiming to advance VR technology with a lighter, more practical design and enhanced entertainment features. Revealed at the Connect event, these glasses weigh five times less than the Meta Quest 3 and resemble conventional eyewear rather than bulky headsets.
Constructed from magnesium alloy and powered by Qualcommâs Snapdragon Reality Elite processor, the glasses rely on an external computing puck that also serves as their battery, allowing users to carry it conveniently in a pocket for mobile use. The glasses incorporate micro-OLED panels delivering a 5K Infinite Display with 37 pixels per degree, alongside Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos support for high-quality visuals and audio.
A standout feature is the glassesâ IMAX Enhanced certification, making them the first VR device to offer this capability. This certification enables users to experience IMAXâs expanded aspect ratio and high-resolution content in virtual reality, providing a distinct viewing experience.
Meta has partnered with Disney to bring select Disney+ titles, including some Marvel movies, to the glasses in 3D starting in November. These films will integrate the userâs physical environment, transforming the viewing experience with immersive visuals, dynamic effects, and spatial audio, effectively blending movie watching with interactive VR elements.
The glasses also include Meta AI, a voice-activated assistant that allows users to control playback and other functions through spoken commands or hand gestures. For example, users can start a movie simply by asking the glasses.
Meta plans to release the VR glasses in spring next year, with a starting price of $1,299.99, marking a renewed effort to make VR more accessible and entertainment-focused.
